WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a development that could mark a turning point in one of Africa’s most volatile regions, technical teams from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda have reached a preliminary peace agreement after three days of intensive negotiations.

The announcement was made during a press briefing by U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Friday, June 20. The initialed agreement is expected to be formally signed by both nations’ foreign ministers in a ministerial ceremony on Friday, June 27, at the U.S. Department of State, in the presence of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“This is a milestone achievement and a significant step toward peace in that region,” Bruce stated. “With implementation of the agreement, the economic investment and development we all want to see will finally be possible.”

The DRC-Rwanda relationship has been marred by years of mistrust, border skirmishes, and the lingering presence of armed militias in the eastern Congo region. Analysts believe this peace framework, if properly enforced, could not only reduce violence but open up new regional trade and infrastructure opportunities.

The United States has long supported diplomatic efforts in Central Africa and continues to view peace in the Great Lakes region as essential for long-term development and security on the continent.

The upcoming signing in Washington is expected to draw international attention and may usher in a new era of cross-border cooperation, economic rebuilding, and renewed trust.

New York 24 will provide full coverage of the ministerial signing ceremony on June 27.
